Happy Holidays from SURF

We’ve almost reached $25,000 in funds raised to buy life saving necessities for refugees. We at SURF are blown away by the amazing generosity of our community.
According to a source on the ground in Lesvos, the estimated daily cost to run one refugee camp (in Moria), is about $7,500. This includes food, hot tea, wood for heating, land rental, utilities, cleaning, supplies, etc. They serve about 2,000 refugees every day. The cost of one cup of coffee that you buy here in the US will support one refugee for an entire day.
If you are warm, well fed, and among loved ones this holiday, please consider helping out people who have left everything behind in search of safety for themselves and their families.

Funding update

We have received over $11,000 in donations in just a few days, and we also have committed pledges for over $12,000 from generous donors like you. We are planning on using the raised funds to buy tents, clothing, blankets, and foods and donating our time to help delivering them directly to the refugees.

We are only a few weeks away from our trip to Lesvos, the Greek island where 1,500 to 2,500 or more refugees from Syria and other conflict-related countries are arriving every day. Your donation, no matter how small, will make a huge difference to these homeless refugees.

Welcome to SURF

Syria is approaching its fifth year in conflict, as reported by the United Nations. This conflict represents the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, with over 50% of the population fleeing their homes, jobs, schools, family and everything they know in the hopes of finding somewhere safe to start a new life1.

The onset of winter has made life even more difficult for these refugees who now must deal with cold, wet weather, and hunger. Lesvos Island in Greece is now home to an estimated 10,000 and growing number of refugees who currently receive no aid from any government. They are surviving solely on the donations and efforts of volunteers – and those resources are being quickly depleted.

On January 27, 2016 a group of friends from the San Francisco Bay Area will travel to Lesvos and spend two weeks volunteering our time and delivering supplies directly to the refugees. By doing this on a small scale, all of the funds we raise will go directly to helping those in need. For more information about where we are going and what we are doing you can go to the Lesvos volunteer website.

Air travel and lodging will be self-funded. 100% of the funds collected from your donation will be used for needed supplies to keep the refugees warm, dry, fed, and healthy. We will update our donors with photos, stories and progress as we continue our mission.

Thank you from your friends at the Syrian United Refugee Fund.
